Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses sound waves to generate images of the inside of your body. It does not use any ionizing radiation, which is why it is often used for prenatal imaging.

Ultrasound is used to examine internal organs (such as the liver, kidneys or gallbladder), tissues and blood flow (Doppler ultrasound). It can be used to help evaluate pain, swelling or infection.

Preparing for your ultrasound:

Abdominal ultrasound: You may be asked to fast for several hours prior to your test
Pelvic ultrasound: You may be asked to drink water in order to have a full bladder
Other ultrasound exams: No special preparation is required

When your test is completed, the images will be sent to a radiologist to review the results and provide you with a report of the findings.
