Breast MRI
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to generate detailed, three-dimensional images of the breast. It is used for various purposes, including:
- As a screening test for high-risk individuals
- As a screening test for women who may be pregnant or are advised not to have a radiation-based test such as mammography
- To evaluate unclear results from a mammogram or ultrasound
- To determine the extent of breast cancer, or in pre-surgical planning
- To check for implant ruptures
A breast MRI may also be used to evaluate the results of breast cancer treatment or to guide a biopsy.
