Computed Tomography (CT)

Also called a “cat” scan, a CT is an advanced technology imaging test to assess the body’s anatomy. The CT scanner contains an x-ray device that rotates around the patient, capturing detailed cross-sectional images of the body that are then combined by a sophisticated computer and evaluated by one of our radiologists.

CT is often used to image the body, head, abdomen or spine. CT is also used to screen for heart disease and other health conditions, including sinus problems, cancerous tumors or diseases or disorders of internal organs. Low-dose CT is also now a preferred method to screen for lung cancer.

What can I expect during my CT examination?

  • CT examinations are performed at our outpatient center. This means that you will return home after the test is complete.
  • Prior to your test, you may be asked to change into a patient gown.
  • Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
  • If your CT requires a contrast agent, you will be provided with instructions about how and when to take the contrast.
  • During your exam, you will lie on a padded table, which moves in and out of the CT scanner.
  • After positioning you on the table, the technologist will go to a separate room to control the exam. However, they will have full sight of you through a window and will be able to speak with you and hear you.
  • Please let the technologist know if you experience any difficulty breathing, start sweating, or have heart palpitations or numbness.
  • You will be asked to lie still during the procedure and you may be asked to hold your breath periodically.

When can I expect my test results?

A report is typically available within 48 hours of your examination. We encourage you to talk with your doctor, who can review your results with you and answer any questions or concerns.
