Breast MRI

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to generate detailed, three-dimensional images of the breast. It is used for various purposes, including:

  • As a screening test for high-risk individuals
  • As a screening test for women who may be pregnant or are advised not to have a radiation-based test such as mammography
  • To evaluate unclear results from a mammogram or ultrasound
  • To determine the extent of breast cancer, or in pre-surgical planning
  • To check for implant ruptures

A breast MRI may also be used to evaluate the results of breast cancer treatment or to guide a biopsy.

What can I expect during a breast MRI?

  • During your MRI, you will lie face down on a special table with openings for your breasts.
  • You will be asked to remain still for the duration of the test, which is about 30-45 minutes.
  • You will hear loud “knocking” or “tapping” noises when the machine is taking images. This is normal. The technologist can provide earplugs or headphones with music if you wish.
  • If your test includes a contrast dye, this will be administered intravenously before your test begins.

When can I expect my breast MRI test results?

Test results for your breast MRI are typically available to you and your doctor within 48 hours of your test and available in our patient portal. Your doctor will discuss your test results with you.
